I. LEGISLATIVE NEWS AND ACTIVITY
National President Chuck Canterbury and Executive Director Jim Pasco had a meeting scheduled with U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen M. Nielsen but it was postponed due to Hurricane Florence.
Executive Director Jim Pasco:
• Spoke with John H. Hill, Assistant Secretary in the Office of Partnership and Engagement at the DHS, on the effort to improve communication and coordination with the Department;
• Spoke with Jennifer S. Korn, Special Assistant to the President, regarding prison and sentencing reform;
• Spoke several times with Steven H. Cook, Associate Deputy Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and other DOJ officials regarding the degree of DOJ involvement into inquiries pertaining to police actions in Mesa, AZ;
• Spoke to U.S. Department of Labor officials regarding LM-2 issues.
Senior Legislative Liaison Tim Richardson represented the FOP on a conference call with Senior Administration officials to discuss prison reform.
Senior Legislative Liaison Tim Richardson and Legislative Liaison Michael Martin attended the National Narcotic Officers’ Associations’ Coalition Drug Enforcement Forum at the national headquarters of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). U.S. Attorney General Jefferson B. Sessions III was the keynote speaker.
Senior Legislative Liaison Richardson and Legislative Liaison Scott Marks:
• Met with staff in the offices of Senators John F. Reed (D-RI) and Edward J. Markey (D-MA) regarding potential legislation to amend the Public Safety Officer Benefit (PSOB) program;
• Attended a monthly meeting of criminal justice stakeholder groups.

II. THIS WEEK IN CONGRESS
House Committees
The Committee on Financial Services considered and passed H.R. 6729, the “Empowering Financial Institutions to Fight Human Trafficking Act” on a 44-5 vote.
Senate Committees
The Committee on the Judiciary entered into an executive session to take up the nomination of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh to be the next Supreme Court Justice, however this was delayed to 20 September. They also took up and passed by voice vote en bloc three pieces of legislation including S. 2961, the “Victims of Childhood Abuse Act Reauthorization Act.”
